Why Charter a Yacht in the US Virgin Islands?
A Caribbean Paradise, Your Way
The US Virgin Islands present an ideal tropical setting with bright sunshine and stunning blue waters and tropical vegetation. A charter yacht provides you with total control to discover this paradise. You can freely move between St. Thomas, St. John, St. Croix and numerous hidden cays without following ferry schedules or tourist groups. A private yacht charter provides both freedom and privacy since you control when and where you want to drop anchor. Begin your day by exploring coral reefs through snorkeling before moving to a private beach which boats access exclusively. The luxurious sailing experience in the USVI gives you flexibility since you can alter your itinerary according to your preferences.
Unmatched Comfort and Service
A fully crewed charter is the ultimate indulgence for luxury travelers. Your captain and crew handle all navigation, piloting and mooring so you can enjoy your time without stress. The holiday provides complete relaxation because all aspects of your stay are professionally managed including gourmet dining and room service. The crew members also function as local guide experts because they want to share island stories while leading you to hidden local destinations.
Do you want to discover an isolated bay or locate the perfect snorkeling spot with turtles? Your crew knows exactly where to go. The crew will arrange your activities together with any last-minute itinerary modifications because flexibility is a standard feature of crewed charters. Crew members on family charters will organize beach treasure hunts and paddle-board competitions while parents enjoy their time with cocktails. Couples and adult groups can expect top-tier service from staff who will arrange private moments like sunset deck hors d'oeuvres or secluded beach dining setup.
Exclusivity and Safety
A personal yacht charter grants you complete control of your vacation experience since you'll have your family or chosen guests aboard exclusively. You'll get access to luxury yacht amenities (roomy accommodations, stylish living areas, hot tub deck, and water recreational equipment) without having to share them with other travelers. The private atmosphere provides the perfect setting to spend quality time with family while also making it ideal for special event celebrations. Travel within the USVI offers easy travel options for Americans since they can visit without a passport and benefit from U.S. regulations.
The USVI provides both remote natural beauty and secure marina facilities which guarantee dependable service. The logistics operate without any complications because the USVI is a U.S. territory so you won't need to worry about currency exchange or roaming charges. The area maintains its Caribbean essence while providing American-style comforts which gives you the best of both worlds. From the time you touch down in St. Thomas until your departure Boatcrowd provides top-level customer service and on-ground support.
Tailored to You – Beyond the Ordinary
Each Boatcrowd charter in the USVI is specifically designed. Our team will create for you a custom-made itinerary based on your preferences (dive oriented, family oriented or just relaxation oriented). And since we have a curated fleet of yachts (from 55’ catamarans to 100’+ mega yachts), we will find the right boat and crew for you. Do you want to spend your evenings in lively ports, or in the middle of nature? Do you prefer sailing or motoring? Are you looking for some yoga on board at sunrise or a guided historical tour on land? We’ll make it happen. Our goal is to offer more than just the average experiences.
A Boatcrowd charter is not only about visiting the USVI’s most popular places: it is also about those little things that make your trip special – a pod of dolphins swimming beside your boat, a private beach party under the stars, or a visit to a secluded tide pool that your captain knows about. The islands are very diverse and with a private charter you can really discover all of them to the fullest, on your own schedule. In short, a luxury crewed yacht charter in the US Virgin Islands offers you freedom, indulgence and personalization in the Caribbean – the perfect way to explore this gem of the Caribbean.
When to Charter in the US Virgin Islands
The US Virgin Islands are a year-round destination, however, there are some seasonal variations to consider when planning your charter. As a general rule of thumb, the ideal time to charter a yacht in the USVI is from November to July, but it is best to avoid late summer and fall due to weather conditions. Here’s a breakdown of the seasons:
Peak Season: December – March
This is the time when the weather is at its best: lots of sunshine, low humidity and pleasant temperatures in the 70s-80s °F. The trade winds blow regularly (usually 15-20 knots) – ideal for sailing. It is also the driest part of the year, so you will have calm seas and good water visibility, ideal for snorkeling and diving. It is also the time of winter holidays when the USVI is in high demand for those looking to escape the cold. Expect a lively atmosphere and crowded marinas. The islands are at their busiest: restaurants and yacht charters are in full operation and there is a lot of social life among the yachters. The only flip side is that it is peak season and prices are high and demand is high and places like St. John’s Maho Bay or St. Thomas’s Lindbergh Bay are likely to be crowded. If you are planning to charter in the high season, it is advisable to book 6 months in advance or even earlier. However, the crowd and the weather are something that most people would not mind.
Off Season: April – June & November
Regular charter clients will tell you that this is the ideal time to charter in the USVI. During the late spring (April-June) and also in November, you will find that there are fewer people, pleasant weather and better prices. The temperature starts to rise a bit (mid 80s by May/June) and the trade winds are moderate (10-15 knots) – perfect for sailing and spending more time at the beach. The sea is usually calm and inviting. A big advantage of spring is that there is more daylight, with about 13 hours of tropical sun per day.
These months are in between the busy months, so you can have places like Trunk Bay or Honeymoon Beach almost to yourself during the week. Restaurants and beach bars are open but not fully booked, and your crew will have an easier time getting a good spot to moor the boat. November is also quite nice – the hurricane season is over, and the holiday season has not yet begun. Please note that November days are a bit shorter, but still okay for fun. Overall, shoulder season charters are usually the best bang for your buck and offer great weather and a bit of peace and quiet.Low Season (July – October)
This is the off-season, coinciding with the Caribbean’s hurricane season. The temperature is extremely hot during the summer with highs reaching 90s°F in late summer, and the humidity is extremely high. In mid-summer, winds can be light and variable, and therefore you may need to do more motoring than sailing on some days. More critically, August through October have the highest risk of tropical storms and hurricanes. In fact, most crewed yachts pause charters during August, September, and October – crews often take their annual leave and yachts undergo maintenance during these months.
However, it is possible to find very good deals in early July or late October, but chartering in peak hurricane season is not recommended unless you have a flexible schedule and trip insurance (and even then, many yachts simply won’t be available). If you are lucky, early summer (July) could present very quiet anchorages and warm, calm seas – you would have the place nearly to yourself, as long as no storms are brewing. If you do decide to go for a summer charter then June or July would be the better bets, but do keep an eye on the weather.
On the whole, the USVI yacht charter sweet spot tends to be from mid-November through July, with April-June being a particular favorite of many captains and guests. During these times, you’ll be experiencing the idyllic Caribbean conditions that make the USVI such a sailing paradise, and Boatcrowd will make sure your itinerary takes advantage of the season.
A Sample 7-Day Itinerary for a Luxury Yacht Charter in USVI
Another one of the joys of a US Virgin Islands superyacht charter is that you can visit multiple islands in one charter. But, as every Boatcrowd itinerary is bespoke, here is a sample 7 day itinerary to give you an idea. This route balances relaxation, adventure, and a taste of all three main USVI islands. You’ll depart from St. Thomas and make a grand loop through St. John and St. Croix before ending back at St. Thomas. (And, of course, you can alter your itinerary – skip or stay longer in places – as you see fit. Our expert captains will adapt to your preferences.)
Day 1 – St. Thomas Embarkation & Water Island
You start your voyage in St. Thomas, where you’ll meet your crew and get settled in your yacht at a top marina (such as Yacht Haven Grande in Charlotte Amalie). After a welcome champagne toast and a safety briefing, set sail for a short hop to Water Island, just off St. Thomas’s coast. In 20 minutes, you’ll arrive at Honeymoon Beach on Water Island – a perfect gentle start. An afternoon swim in the calm, clear waters or paddleboarding is possible. The crew can organize a private beach picnic here for lunch, or you may just want to relax on deck and have the chef prepare some gourmet snacks.
In the evening, soak in your first Caribbean sunset as it sets the sky on fire. At anchor in Honeymoon Bay, you’ll enjoy a quiet night under the stars. The lights of St. Thomas are visible across the bay, but you’re away from the action – the perfect compromise for your first night. (If you’re keen to get some nightlife, you could boat back to Charlotte Amalie to take a walk or have a drink, but most people love the peace and quiet of staying moored at Water Island on day one.)
Day 2 – St. John’s North Shore Beaches
In the morning, head east towards St. John, the smallest of the main USVI islands and largely a national park. About an hour later, you’ll arrive at Caneel Bay or Hawksnest Bay on St. John’s north shore. These bays are blessed with the finest white sand beaches and coral reefs right off the beach. Take a dip for an easy snorkel and you could see rainbow parrotfish and stingrays passing over the coral. A short sail further takes you to famous Trunk Bay, often considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world with an underwater snorkeling trail and a picturesque cay in the middle. Enjoy a leisurely lunch onboard – maybe fresh local grilled mahi-mahi – anchored off the stunning aqua waters of Trunk Bay.
In the afternoon, sail to Maho Bay, a quiet and protected bay home to sea turtles. Here, kids and adults can snorkel in the shallow waters and almost definitely see gentle green turtles eating seagrass below. It is a once in a lifetime experience to swim with these creatures in their own habitat. At night, the yacht will anchor or take a mooring in Francis Bay or Leinster Bay, nearby quiet spots. After dinner, you could dinghy ashore for a casual bonfire on the beach or just enjoy the peacefulness of the National Park environment. Because there is no development around, the stars over St. John are incredibly bright – a perfect roof for an evening on the flybridge.
Day 3 – St. John Adventures (Waterlemon Cay & Coral Bay)
Start your day when the sun rises for a refreshing paddleboard session followed by a guided snorkel experience at Waterlemon Cay which sits in Leinster Bay as a small coral island famous for its starfish and marine biodiversity. After your breakfast you can choose between land activities by hiking to the nearby Annaberg Sugar Mill Ruins. A simple walking route takes you to historic sites where you can see stone ruins of a windmill and admire the views of Tortola across the ocean. The crew will navigate the yacht through the eastern edge of St. John to reach Coral Bay the island's relaxed bohemian area during the late morning. The yacht will probably make stops at Whistling Cay and Hansen Bay to let passengers explore coral gardens filled with colorful fish.
The floating taco bar Lime Out awaits you in Coral Bay when you arrive for lunchtime. The crew will drop anchor while you float toward Lime Out's floating boat to indulge in gourmet tacos and drinks in the middle of the bay. This distinct St. John experience brings joy to families and adults who visit the location. The afternoon in Coral Bay brings you a chance to unwind while the peaceful waters of the bay allow deck guests to try kayaking or relax with a scenic view of St. John's forested hills. The yacht will find its nighttime rest in Salt Pond Bay or Lameshur Bay situated on St. John's south shore. These bays remain calm and untouched thus creating perfect conditions for a peaceful night. Dinner service occurs outdoors beneath the evening stars. Tonight the chef prepares Caribbean-inspired dishes such as conch fritters and Johnny Cakes and spiced fish which pay tribute to the regional flavors. You'll get a good night's rest while listening to the waves gently touching the hull in this peaceful anchorage.
Day 4 – Sail to St. Croix
The fourth day brings an exciting journey to explore St. Croix because it stands as the largest and culturally different island among the USVI. The open-water sail from St. John to St. Croix takes approximately 4–5 hours of exhilarating sailing through the yacht and the Caribbean Sea. The morning begins with breakfast before the captain sets a southern course. During your voyage observe dolphins swimming beneath the bow wave or flying fish gliding across the surface of the water. You will currently be sailing through the deeper waters of the Caribbean Sea. The shape of St. Croix emerges in front of you as you reach midday or early afternoon.
The first port of call is Buck Island Reef National Monument which surrounds St. Croix's northeastern shoreline. The tiny uninhabited island surrounds a coral reef which stands as one of the Caribbean's most famous marine ecosystems. Put on your snorkeling equipment because you need to discover an underwater path featuring colorful coral structures along with numerous tropical fish species. Visitors often visit Buck Island's reef because this protected national monument presents remarkable underwater life including elkhorn corals and eagle rays and nurse sharks resting on the ocean floor. After swimming through the coral reef take a walk on the island's sandy beach where the white sand meets the blue ocean creating perfect photographs.
The yacht will cruise to St. Croix's main island after passengers enjoy their late lunch. Christiansted serves as your anchor position since it stands among St. Croix's two historic settlements. The harbor of Christiansted presents a charming atmosphere because it features pastel-colored Danish colonial buildings set against a natural backdrop of green hills. You should take the tender to explore Christiansted's waterfront and cobblestone shopping district because Fort Christiansvaern from the 18th century and the colorful shops deserve your attention. You should eat dinner at one of St. Croix's restaurants to experience its dining culture. The dining scene of St. Croix showcases farm-to-table restaurants which serve Caribbean-Danish-American fusion cuisine. Your crew can book a dining reservation at a local restaurant of high standing or you may choose to dine onboard for another elegant meal while enjoying Christiansted Harbor's peacefulness. The distinct atmosphere of St. Croix fills the air whether you choose to dine onshore or enjoy the peace of Christiansted Harbor.
Day 5 – Discovering St. Croix
The sounds of St. Croix welcome you through the night: Roosters wake up the neighborhood while waves gently crash as you start your new exploration day. At the start of the day you can choose between visiting Christiansted’s historical sites such as the fort and scale house which operate as tourist attractions or participating in a brief island tour by car to view the west end rainforest and Cruzan Rum Distillery.
If ocean activities interest you most then you should dive or snorkel at the St. Croix Wall (available for certified divers) or the Frederiksted Pier. Certified divers should experience the breathtaking Wall located off St. Croix's north shore because it features 30-foot drop-offs alongside coral-covered canyons (this dive site stands out) yet snorkelers will find paradise at Frederiksted Pier because the shallow waters display vibrant marine life including seahorses along with octopuses and coral-encrusted pilings. The crew will bring you to Turtle Beach on Buck Island or Chenay Bay reef for a less demanding snorkelling experience in case you didn't get enough snorkelling the previous day.
After your mid-morning activity join your crew for lunch on the aft deck before the yacht travels north. You will start your return journey to St. Thomas and St. John during the early part of the afternoon. The 35-nautical-mile distance between St. Croix and St. Thomas provides an excellent opportunity for relaxation on deck reading books while fishing from the stern since many charter yachts deploy fishing lines during these crossings and you might catch mahi or tuna en route. The St. Thomas region approaches as the sun sets.
Christmas Cove located at Great St. James Island stands as your ideal anchorage for the night since it lies near St. Thomas's eastern boundary. This sheltered bay stays peaceful and gets recognition for its evening charm. The floating pizzeria “Pizza Pi” (depending on its opening status your crew can obtain mouthwatering wood-fired pizzas from this unique boat-restaurant). The evening at Christmas Cove offers you time to snorkel before enjoying your last night on board. During the evening your crew plans either a movie screening on the deck under starlight or they will organize a fish-feeding session using spotlights from the swim platform to observe tarpon swimming beneath the underwater illumination. The evening provides an ideal peaceful conclusion to your day full of adventure.
Day 6 – St. Thomas Encore (Magens Bay & Charlotte Amalie)
Take a brief boat tour to Magens Bay located on St. Thomas’s north shore because this spot ranks among the Caribbean’s most attractive bays. The one-mile-long white-sand beach of Magens Bay faces green mountains while its waters remain peaceful. This location provides the perfect conditions for watersports activities. The yacht provides various recreational equipment including kayaks together with stand-up paddleboards and snorkeling equipment and sometimes wave runners or seabobs. The crew brings out the entertainment equipment here for tubing or wakeboarding from the tender followed by shoreline paddling to find spotted eagle rays or floating and swimming in the gentle ocean waves.
If you feel energetic enough for a brief hike then Margaret Hill's overlook offers breathtaking views across Magens Bay which deserves inspection. Visitors who want to use land facilities can find a beach bar and boutique at Magens that serve drinks and sell local items. Your journey back to port begins with a leisurely cruise after spending a fun-filled morning at Magens. The yacht makes its way back to Charlotte Amalie which serves as the capital of St. Thomas during the late afternoon hours. You could take pleasure in a picturesque cruise through Charlotte Amalie Harbor instead of heading directly to the dock.
The boat journey will pass by Hassel Island which exists at the harbour entrance and contains historical sites including British fortifications as well as marine railway structures. A mini harbour tour offers stunning views because you will witness both seaplanes taking off and colonial architecture along the waterfront and distant large cruise ships. You should dock at the marina during early evening hours. Your last evening presents an opportunity to experience the lively atmosphere of St. Thomas. You can find duty-free shopping opportunities and purchase last-minute gifts by walking through Charlotte Amalie's cobblestone downtown area (you can pick up some local rum or handmade jewelry).
The island of St. Thomas presents visitors with choices between upscale oceanfront dining establishments serving lobster alongside casual beach bars that host live music performances. The Boatcrowd concierge team will suggest the ideal location for you to enjoy since they know all the best spots from hilltop romantic dinners to family-friendly authentic BBQ venues with steelpan music. The crew on board will be fully prepared for your departure tomorrow while you spend the evening on the yacht. The chef prepares your last dessert as you enjoy the tropical breeze on deck while savoring Cruzan rum cake or banana flambé.
Day 7 – Disembarkation in St. Thomas
The seventh day begins with your marina stay at St. Thomas. Your last breakfast on board consists of fresh island fruits together with pastries. All crew members who feel like family will bid farewell as you exchange photographs during your remaining time on board. The remaining flight time allows you to explore Charlotte Amalie by walking the famous 99 Steps up to Blackbeard’s Castle followed by visiting historic Fort Christian for your last cultural experience. The last views of your yacht and harbor should be appreciated by anyone who cannot take a guided tour of Charlotte Amalie.
The late morning arrival marks the end of your yacht stay. Your crew will help you carry your luggage before arranging airport transportation or your next travel destination. You bring back an endless collection of memories which include the ocean heat against your skin and the beautiful emerald landscapes stretching across all directions and the exceptional service you received throughout your journey. The seven-day voyage presented guests with active harbor scenes and peaceful bays alongside turtle snorkeling opportunities and secluded beach explorations and a blue-water voyage to St. Croix within their single journey.
